Five TELs of the HEART
Our TELs of the Heart control our innate experience of Distance: that is the space between Self and Other. Below we explore the five Heart TELs of Shame that can take over our bodies, each transporting us into a State Experience.
-
Throughout our conscious life, our bodies are capable of blending multiple core states and expressing them in complicated mixtures we call Moods. Occasionally our conscious experiences will take a pause and we will find ourselves absorbed in one overpowering instinctual state. These State experiences (pleasant or unpleasant) can remind us quickly that we are physical beings utterly beholden to our primitive instincts. We experience these moments less like an emotion and more like an ever present, environmental circumstance.
One big indicator that we are entering a State Experience is that whatever is happening feels like it has ALWAYS been that way and will NEVER change.
In FERUS TEL each State Experience is identified as a TEL and is displayed in the form of a graphic image.
State Experience of RELIEF
When Shame is resolved, there comes a tender awakening to a higher order of relations. Since Shame is the instinct that gives us a spatial pause before self trust allows its full embrace of others, the dissolution of shame marks the starting point of a transpersonal journey toward connection. With no need to self protect, transcendent realms of human concourse beckon. When fully resolved of Shame, the body enters into a state of no distance, immersed and at one with a non-objectified universe.

State Experience of SYMPATHY
When Shame’s presence promotes connection to others in order to soothe itself, the body responds by increasing in sympathetic sensitivity. This accentuation of everyday experience misses no detail that might serve to join. The potential for high stake risks rise but they appear small compared to the untapped wonders revealed. Generally the awakened aura of those in a sympathetic state is attractive and can be a magnet that draws the world closer.
Moods that are Accepting of Shame
State Experience of DISTRESS
When the rejection of shame is in full force, the body enters a temporary hiatus from its exposure to others. This lockdown of sensitivity allows for the digestion of previous experiences and an opening to a more interior landscape. Given that most Sensitive people require Distressed periods to metabolize new information, there tends to be a see saw dynamic between the two states. Games of Withdrawal and Pursuit are common when Distressed and Sympathetic states are at play.

State Experience of TIREDNESS
This state of high reactivity to Shame brings into doubt one’s own realness. With no support from like minded others, internal balance becomes unachievable and vertigo reigns. Social neglect actually bends space in such a way that distances expand and materiality loses dimension. In states of such extreme reactive tiredness with life, nothing can be grasped to hold you in place. The attempt to freeze oneself in place is but one of a variety of responses to such heart exhaustion, but they all involve managing an intense upending awareness of life’s immateriality.

State Experience of SADNESS
When experiencing Shame at its most overwhelming, one is driven solely by a necessity to dis-inhabit one’s every sensation. It is not physical pain but identity pain that consumes the mind. The unshakeable thought that “there is something deeply wrong with me” rules the story line. States of anguished Sadness tend to operate in a subterranean way through dream narratives or sickness induced delirium. To the wakened consciousness, to express pure Sadness directly requires a faith that a form of higher power is at play. Prayer is the natural idiom for those feeling their deep personal severance from humanity.
